DepEd Secretary | Senator Angara fully supports raising teacher salaries

Incoming Senator Jose Edgardo "Sonny" Angara, Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), announced on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, his full endorsement for increasing teachers' salaries to enhance the quality of education in the country.

Angara emphasized his commitment to continuing Vice President Sara Duterte's initiatives aimed at improving teachers' working conditions, while also focusing on enhancing educators' salaries and benefits.

"We are fully supportive of these salary increases for teachers because we understand that the quality of education is affected when teachers are truly inspired and when we attract the best and brightest," said Angara.

“Hundred percent in support po tayo for all of these teachers' increases dahil alam natin na apektado 'yung kalidad ng edukasyon kapag talagang inspired 'yung mga teachers at you attract the best, 'yung pinakamagagaling, the best and the brightest ika nga,” said Angara.

When asked about the possibility of raising entry-level teachers' salaries to P50,000, Angara mentioned that he would explore this possibility in collaboration with agencies such as the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

"We will examine and study it," Angara stated.

"Tignan ho natin, pag-aralan natin (Let's see and study it)," Angara said.

In addition to salary increases, Angara expressed his goal of improving teachers' working conditions by reducing their non-teaching responsibilities, allowing them to focus more on their primary duties.

Furthermore, Angara voiced his support for banning students from bringing or using gadgets in schools to help them concentrate on their studies.
